News / Star Ruler 2 on Space Game Junkie's Podcast
« on: August 09, 2013, 12:08:15 AM »
We did a podcast with Space Game Junkie yesterday on Star Ruler 2 -- tune in for discussion on the game's design, what we're changing/keeping, and more!
Link to the Podcast

As the year is just about to come to its end (or already has for some of you) I thought it'd be the perfect time to ask the community for their candid thoughts on Star Ruler.

What did we do well?  What did we do poorly?  What was just ugly and unusable?  We've got a lot of commentary on these things in the past but I thought I'd give it another spin.  People have been playing the game for longer, new patches haven't been getting in the way of clouding opinion, and there's a lot of new blood on the forums too.

Since I'm the UI designer as well, I'd like some feedback on that in particular: What did I do well?  What was done worse?  What things in the UI built to try and aid your gameplay wound up being useless/unusable and why?  I'm a level designer by trade, even though I'm working hard on bringing you guys a good UI, so this kind of feedback I place a good deal of importance and reflection on.

Suggestions / Object Information Panel Revamp
« on: April 26, 2011, 08:49:26 AM »
So while I'm working on this thing, I want to make sure I don't have a blind eye turned to a particular problem or frustration.  What are your problems with the current Object Information Panel?  What does it do well and what does it do poorly?

One of the things I'm trying to work into the new OIP is context sensitivity.  I'd like it to show different things depending on what kind of object you have selected (a star, a system, a planet, ships, etc.).  What sorts of things spring to mind when thinking about that?

News / Good News, Everyone!
« on: February 09, 2011, 09:45:16 AM »
Haarlem, The Netherlands - 9 February 2011 - Videogames publisher Iceberg Interactive and game development company Blind Mind Studios have their heads far above the clouds now that they have come to a publishing agreement for Star Ruler, the space RTS for PC. Star Ruler will help players obtain galactic domination from September 2011 onwards.

Iceberg Interactive CEO Erik Schreuder says: "Star Ruler is a great looking game that actually makes you feel like you are in space, from enjoying a stellar-size view for strategic moves to zooming in to the thick of the ship-to-ship combat action when needed. We will hold back the retail release until the game has reached its full potential, something the developer is continuing to work very hard on, while extending its core of followers, a core that we aim to greatly expand on with the in store release later this year."

Andrew Ackermann, owner of Blind Mind Studios says: "Blind Mind Studios is proud to partner with Iceberg Interactive to bring Star Ruler to store shelves. We hope players are as excited as we are for the upcoming retail release; the studio is in full swing, preparing the game for launch. It's going to be something special."

Although the game has had its initial digital release at the end of 2010, the development team of Blind Mind Studios has been and will be working on new gameplay features, additional content and a number of enhancements that will all be included in Iceberg's retail release, as well as patched into Iceberg's digital version. A complete list of final features, including bonus materials for the boxed version, will be made public when closer to the retail release.

Iceberg Interactive will be releasing the exclusive boxed version of Star Ruler into retail stores throughout Europe, Australia, South-East Asia and various other territories. Non-exclusive digital rights are also included in the publishing deal. Plans for localized versions are not final but a German version is certain.

Star Ruler Discussion / Building a better diplomacy system
« on: February 09, 2011, 01:59:17 AM »
As we're redoing the diplomacy system mostly from the ground-up, we're interested to know what sort of diplomacy system and diplomacy elements Star Ruler would be best served.  What sort of things do you think adding into Star Ruler would make the game more entertaining for you?

In particular, what do you think of the following?
[ * ]  Trade routes between Empires that can be stolen from
[ * ]  Trade between Empires being automatically created and modified by War and Peace (can't be closed down or turned off, but can be embargoed and so forth)
[ * ]  Aid ships which can convert, over time, planets with negative mood into planets owned by you (no effect on planets with happy citizens)
[ * ]  Aid ships boost your empire's Mood by a little whenever they 'liberate' a world.
[ * ]  Your population's Mood being influenced by long wars

This is mostly an idea/feedback thread.  We'd like to not stray too far into making SR favored in either SP or MP so please make whatever elements or systems you suggest MP and SP friendly.  (That means avoiding the usual MP-hotbead subjects:  Unconditional Surrender where you give another player all your assets, etc.)

Modding / [Manual] The Dev Tools
« on: December 21, 2010, 09:10:48 AM »
Given that we have these semi-functional tools laying around in all your Star Ruler executables and that some tasks are exceedingly difficult without them (e.g. creating new particle systems and adding firing, impact, and engine points to ships) I figure I should get you some info. on how to use the tools that are currently available.  Before I start, a disclaimer:

Warning:  The Developer Tools are not finished products.  As such, much of their functionality and polish is missing (buttons which do nothing, implied functions which don't exist, aggravating / non-smooth controls).  Use these tools at your own peril as they are not officially supported at this time.

All that said, I'll start writing up the manual now.  The posts that follow this post will describe briefly how to interact with and accomplish basic tasks in the Model Configurator and the Particle Editor, including how to gain access to those tools.

Modding / [Important] Listing your mod on ModDB
« on: November 18, 2010, 09:49:46 AM »
Our ModDB profile lies here:
You may notice that our game has a Mods tab, this is where Mods will be listed on our profile.  Should you want to post your Mod on ModDB for greater exposure and for another free, reliable, download mirror, there are some things to keep in mind to keep things working smoothly:

(Getting started) To create a Mod for Star Ruler on ModDB/IndieDB, go to our game's listing ( and then click on the Mods tab near the top of the game's section of the page.   This will bring you to the Mods tab.  Underneath the header you'll find that Expanded Universe is listed; above it, there should be a boxed + icon and a boxed list icon.  Hover over and click on the + icon to start the process of adding your game.  You'll need an icon, a header image, and some other things before the game can be listed.

(1) Whilst creating a Mod on ModDB you'll notice there's a Developer drop-down box.  Do not select us as the developers or it'll relinquish your control over the Mod and give it over to us.  As we can't keep your Mods up to date nearly as easily or as well as you can, we'd prefer it if you were the developers of your own Mods.

(2) It will take some time for an admin to authorize your mod.  Upload some images of what your Mod does if possible and if your Mod isn't easily represented in picture-format, then take pictures of gameplay while you have it on; demonstrate what your mod does.  These images and the download of your mod (if you've got a download ready) will speed your Mod to be authorized immediately.  Most Mods take from 4 to 24 hours to get authorization.

(3) If you encounter any problems with being unable to control your Mod or add things to it, wait for the authorization to complete.  Once authorization has completed and you're still unable to add/change/remove things on your Mod's page listing, please contact us immediately and we'll see if it's something we need to look at or that ModDB's staff will have to help you with.

Warning: ModDB does require there to be some progress on your Mod before it can be listed on ModDB.  Concept art, etc. is an acceptable stage of development, but you have to show it off somehow.  The more complete the Mod is, the more likely it is to be listable -- if your Mod (even if barebones) can be loaded into and played in Star Ruler, you're likely ready for listing.

Adding stuff to your Mod:  To add things to your Mod, just click on the greyed-out categories in its listing. (News,Features, etc.) and while in there, click on the appropriate 'make new' button/link in that category's screen to add new content.

News / Coming Soon...!
« on: September 06, 2010, 01:34:44 PM »

We are proud to announce that Star Ruler will be available on Steam at the earliest of September the 13th.

Please post in here and please upload the ship design which succeeded.

Also please describe how the ship behaved and how you got the Jump command to work.

This is very important for us to be able to diagnose and finally resolve the Jumpdrive's inability to jump reliably.

Modding / How to add models and textures into the game.
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:26:29 PM »
Thanks to echo66 for his help in sorting this article out while I was working on other things.

Please post any questions you have and we'll try to answer them as soon as possible.

Important Points:
* Currently you can't make mods which override or add models to the game
* Overriding the default models is possible.
* Currently shipsets and accompanying models/textures are not sent by the server to clients even in the event of modification.  Clients will see default models, you will see your custom models.
* A guide on how to add impact points, firing points, and the engine particle system are to shortly follow.

EDIT: Opened up thread as I haven't been updating this as much as it could be.  Modders feel free to post snippets for other modders. :)

We were able to contact them and were able to get them to update their copy to the release build.

They're downloading it now and it should be available shortly.  We'll let you know when to update.
