I'm gonna say lots. They would run out of ammo far before they got near it!

Dreadnaughts are anti-fighter ships, so they're not going to be terribly effective at killing planets.

That said, planets have lots of hp, so you'll still need loads even if you build dedicated planet-killers. DSMs are your best bet.

Ever played Knights of the Old Republic where that Malak guy obliterates Taris with his Star Destroyer in that cutscene? Would love to see that with Dreadnoughts. :D

Just an fyi, the ship you're referring to was an "Interdictor-class cruiser", not a Star Destroyer.

FYI it was the leviathen, a rather unique vessel that was neither. Both Star Destroyers and Interdictor classes didnt come around to the Galactic Empire. This is set like 10000 years before the events of the movie.

you can destroy planets and moons. To do so hold down control, right click on a star or planet and click attack. Dont use dreadnaughts or youll be there all day, best bet is to use a larger ship equipped with a directed spatial manipulator thingy magiggy. Remember tho you blow a star, anything attacking it is practically doomed. Although i suppose if you equipped a ship with an advanced targeting sensor, so the weapon was very long range, fired the gun and then activated a jump drive, you might be able to get out in time.

Bolded key bit...

I found this out in my first game (playing the tutorial way past it's 'end') by accident.  I was having trouble killing an enemy system (ships in it) and so I thought I would try the DSM.

Build a bunch of fairly big cruisers that were basically DSMs and big power generators (2nd try).  After dealing soundly with some nearby enemies they fired on the planet... I had never seen red in the HP bar for a planet and then it was almost all red... luckily the planet 'died' without going boom.  Took a while to repair (which again had me laughing maniacally)...  That first game was just tons of laughs and holy s@#$ moments... Still get those moments but learning how to do stuff on (and with) purpose.

Responding to a very old post, but didn't notice it until now and it demands responding :P

The Leviathan was an Interdictor-class cruiser

Huh, the Leviathan WAS an Interdictor then?  Just a really really really old version?

Now it makes even less sense that it was able to rapidly destroy a heavily urbanised planetary surface on its own.  I'm not debating that Turbolasers are very powerful, even 10,000 years before the time of the Galactic Empire, but they're not destroy hundreds of square kilometers of kilometer-deep city per shot powerful.  It should have taken the Leviathan MONTHS to destroy Taris.

Ah well.  Sci fi writers really do have no sense of scale.

Good game, minor flaw.  Still bugs me. z: )

For you people dreadnoughts are anti-fighters... But I came from EVE, and for me dreadnoughts is huge capital ships capable of taking down stations and bombarding planets to it's core in siege mode...

My group generally disallows DSM as they're a bit overpowered (understandable, as they're super weapons, but not fun for us) so I've found the best way to destroy a planet is a lot of large artillery stations which can hit the target planet from another solar system. :)

They're not even a threat to your own stuff usually, if captured, because of the minimum fire distance and they can fire on incoming ships as well.

I always thought it was strange that dreadnoughts are crowd control in this game. In the real world dreadnought was a term for 'all big gun' battleships, quite the opposite.
