The Short Star Ruler Guide to Galactic Victory!
« on: April 20, 2012, 05:03:50 AM »
Hello everyone,

I'm a star ruler player and at the moment the 10 or so players who regularly play the game online cant defeat me at it by a long stretch. Only YAGH still poses some what of a challenge. I hope to herein explain my tactics so that you can learn to be effective also. The guide intended to be a crash course for players who have learned the very basics of the game.

here attached is a rare file with a pdf file (which is the guide) and 3 folders which contain my designs, queues and my race (The Human Race). The guide is still new and fresh and I believe just about every Star Ruler player who wants to play effectively should at least follow it once. My writing may be a little odd. I hope to iron out the flaws as I find them :P.

Sincerely, Sander

ps. can someone explain better then me, how to import races and queues and layouts into Star Ruler in the various OSs?
pss. are the devs good at their own game?

Since I was unable to get through the tutorial because of a bug, I've been playing around trying to get a hang of SR, and thought I'd have a go at following this guide (Thanks Sander) step by step.

I'm not very far through it and I've come to an instruction which seems not quite right to me (I know, what do I know) so I thought I'd ask here just to make sure I'm not going to mess the whole thing up so early on.

I've highlighted it here:

"When you finish researching
Metallurgy Lv 2 your Homeworld
should be just about beginning
construction of the last 2-3 science
labs. Open your planets overview and
go to the structures tab and shift-click
the renove button.
Go back to the
main tab and shift-drag the science
labs down to the bottom of the queue.
Queue up the construction of 29
“ScoutFast I” ships by ctrl-right double
clicking the design and typing in 29 and
checking the “Batch Construction” box. "

If I shift click the remove button as directed I'll remove my galactic capitol, which doesn't seem sensible, so I'd appreciate it if someone else who's also using this guide could just confirm it for me.

Thanks

renove != remove

they meant renovate button.  Shift clicking the renovate button means "renovate all buildings" which will renovate your mines and factories to lvl 2 since you just improved your metallurgy tech

OK seronis, thank you very much.   8)
Logical really, but the typo was so close to 'remove'.

Excellent guide, Sander, it works really well. In fact I just tried it, and it resulted in the following totally stupid situtation:
I decided to use a 1000-star galaxy, and since I put 6 AI on it, instead of the one in your guide, I thought, "eh, better put them on medium just to be safe."

So about 30 minutes in with over 3M metal, I sent out a colony swarm and a batch of the final 500 probe droids. 20 minutes later, I finally finished getting all of the new colonies set up, and zoomed out to check on the AI now that I could see all of the systems... Me: ~200 systems. AI... 5 each?! No wonder even the aggro ones accepted my peace offers in about 5 nanoseconds. :P I guess hard/cheat is the min AI you should use with this. :)

Also, several of the ship designs have all of the components stacked on top of each other. They work so long as you don't touch them, but they're impossible to see what's going on or tweak.

um... you can open the text files of the ship designs and see what´s there. They're on top of eachother so the big ship parts get damaged before the small ship parts. The smaller ship part's are more important so they need protection from the bigger ship parts.

this was the best thing I found to help me understand the game play before i go off tweaking your planet builds.

one thing i kept running into in this was low adv. elec. and had to manage the empire pretty close, but that is your friend!!!

other than that my research after your initial block-- i started just plugging at random really and realized that I had no new ships when the enemy started flowing in. so I would suggest start working on ship hulls and weapon systems as well after you run out from the initial eco boost.

Peace out ya'll keep up the great work. there is new blood in the forums!

THIS IS THE REASON I AM NO LONGER GETTING ANNOYED AT THIS GAME.
(cant say this enough, this should be posted where noobs can read it first day)

however... now it is time to understand why this works and how the ships are setup.

now that I have shared this with my friends who bought the game I am going to have to retech to beat this design. XD got to make my life always harder.

Thanks for this :)

Can someone explain this passage though?
"[...]go to the advanced tab and set to level gain curve and level health curve to 1.41, this is important for the proper functioning of the game[...]"

If I started a game without doing that, do I need to start over?

Those settings only affect the game if chosen when it was created.

Which means if the guide was written for these settings, you must create a new game with these settings. If you dont, the guide might not work, because your ressource income might not scale correctly with the research/production queues from the guide.

I suggest to set the level health curve to 1.41 because it is the closest approximation of the square root of 2 that the game will allow you to set it to. If you don't set it to 1.41 the health curve wont quite double every 2 levels.
