Live Patch Notes for version 1.0.8.0
Download 1.0.7.8 → 1.0.8.0
Previous Patch: 1.0.7.6 → 1.0.7.8

Changes: Final
[Fixed] Fixed issues related to the recently added special systems feature.
[Fixed] Fixed issues with AI diplomacy in loaded games.
[Fixed] Pirates still had incorrect research rates in loaded games.
[Fixed] 'Continue' would not consistently choose the newest save.
[Changed] Load Game menu now shows the current mod you're in.
[Added] Added a new Star Corona effect, which should produce much nicer and more active looking stars!
[Added] Added a completely redone tutorial with more information presented in a, we hope, more effective way.

A few? How about almost all of them? I say 95% of companies don't care about their games like BMS does. The only other company that I know that does as many patches is Blizzard with Diablo II.

My other favorite games The Elder Scroll series, only have 2 or 3 major patches and that is it. I can't wait for an expansion and or another sequel to Star Ruler from BMS. They have a customer for life now.

A screenshot wouldn't do it justice, it's a lot more animated than the previous corona.

You'll see a much better approximation, but unfortunately I haven't figured out how to do the big circular ones that I've always wanted to show off. Maybe in the future...

Hello! I wasn't here for a month and I noticed a lot of changes like subsystems, new effects and option to buy game from here.
 
This new star effect looks better than the last one. I would like to see solar prominences, but I guess it may be require a lot of computation to generate such effects.

Insane it would be if they released this in 3 days. I remember that they released patches in just two, three days with only this amount.

The patch was mainly released this quickly because there's this 'thing' tomorrow that we wanted to have the new tutorial in for ;)

Yeah, we used to have much faster/larger patches in the beginning, but that was because there was way more stuff left to do, which makes it easier to fill up the notes.

After a clean re-install, the new corona effect around stars still appears as a flickering, multi-colored, pixelated sort of thing. Probably not what you intended. ;) Could it be something on my end?

Could you post your log.txt? There might be errors in there indicating what is going wrong.

Sure.

What is your GPU? A number of shaders are reporting errors that no one else has reported, so I think your GPU can't actually support GLSL shaders, whether it claims to or not. You may also need to update your drivers.

I'm not sure what you mean. The way localization works, if you're missing a string in the non-english language, it should show up as english instead. Perhaps your english.txt didn't update correctly?

The english.txt is from April, so updater didn't update this file. What I meant is on this picture.

One of your patches went wrong. I'd recommend starting from a fresh install, redownloading the installer and patches.

OK. I reinstalled and applied patches in correct order. Now strings are shown properly.

By the way, was the "paint select" feature only added recently? I've never stumbled across this before.


As for the tutorial, while it contains a lot of information, even I as a Star Ruler veteran find it far too much text too read. New players will be overwhelmed by the amount of information it contains; especially since it is presented in a rather minimalistic and passive manner ("Here, go read this 500-page book. You can play the game later.").

I know this would take a lot of time and work, so I don't expect this to be realized anytime soon (if ever), but for a game of Star Ruler's complexity, the best way to get players to actually play through and understand the tutorial as a whole would probably be to divide the tutorial into several interactive chapters that are started separately. Despite the wealth of information, I doubt that I would've learned much from the tutorial if I was new to Star Ruler. Despite having read through it, I would have simply forgot about most of it after finishing it.

That said, it is still obvious you put quite a lot of work and effort into the new tutorial; so I'm not trying to bash you for it, merely suggesting what I think would be the optimal solution under ideal circumstances. :)


Regarding the new corona effect: Very nice! IMHO it could even be a littler larger by default - it should make stars look even more active.

Paint select has always been in, but I think we keep forgetting to mention it.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to redo the tutorial as we had to finalize everything for localization into German for the retail release.

Yeah, I thought the corona could be bigger, but this one is also much brighter, so I thought there may be other issues with enlarging it. Glad you like it, though!

It's true, there is a lot of text. The aim of this tutorial remake was to display the text in a more presentable and more accessible manner. We separated it into very short, very topical notes, improving readability and allowing you to skim more easily (this is also why the coloring was added). The intent was that any note that seems like something obvious to you, or something you already figured out yourself, can be skipped, letting you go through the tutorial more selectively and simultaneously presenting each note as a sort of self-contained ("What is X?" or "How do I Y?" topic).

I myself consider it an improvement about the continuous stream of text that the previous tutorial had (or I wouldn't have suggested we make it like this ;)), but it is in essence a question of taste.

"Interactivity" in a tutorial for this is very hard to do. Other than spawning enemy ships for you at some point to show you combat, I can't think of any interactive elements that could be added.

We also prefer you save and load the tutorial, or use the "Contents" button to navigate, over having to start separate games for each section of the tutorial.
